Dissecting Prototypes

When dissecting prototypes we need to think about how they would work, how we talk and find an opportunity for prototypes as well as being resourceful while prototyping.

The qualities of prototyping are Tenuous, Material, and Present. firstly Tenuous meaning shifting from abstract to concrete ideas while keeping some parts unspecified helps the ideation area while at the same time not necessary finishing it all. Material must be in thought when thinking of the idea’s and shouldn’t be left till the end. I also learned even what could be considered a waste of time could be a step toward better prototype and more knowledge about a certain subject. When presenting make it an experience having a low fidelity could be an advantage since you have time to build on input from other stakeholders. The purpose of Prototyping is to have a look & feel of the role it plays then implementation of its characteristics.

Five Dimensions of fidelity (Mccrudy et al. 2006) :

  1. Level of visual refinement
  2. Breadth of functionality
  3. Depth of functionality
  4. Richness of interactivity
  5. Richness of data model

Mccurdy also says that prototypes can be a mix of both low and high fidelity meaning it could be a “mixed” fidelity. There is also something called filtered dimensions (lim et al. 2008) which include Appearance, Data, Functionality, Interactivity, and Spatial structure. There is something else called Manifest dimensions (lim et al. 2008) which include Material, Resolution, and Scope. These models help sharpen the purpose and plan such as finding opportunities for your design such as a change of material from wood to plastic.
