Beyond the norm

There are 2 different design groups for prototyping. There is Affirmative Design which follows the status quo of global capitalism and Critical Design which rejects the process that emboidies alernative social, cultural, technical or economical values (Dunne & Raby, 2001)

Dunne and Raby 2009 release A/B, A Manifesto where they make a distinguise between Affirmative and Critical words for example Affirmative would use problem solving and Critical would use problem finding.

There are critiques of critical design such as is it actually critical? and what counts as being affirmative? and who decides what is affirmative?

Speculative design is another kind of design way where it focuses on imagining and using images to show something which is focused mostly on science and technology/ futuristic while critical design is dealing with now.

Design fiction is Acknowledging a connection between science fiction and science facts such as sketching the future without thinking of the technology that would be available and wouldn’t with the thought of having people resemblance. Compared to critical design, speculative design keeps in mind how an object would fit into the wider scheme of things i.e. the world. Speculative design doesn’t comment or critique.
