An interesting aspect that was brought up during the lecture was that to have a shared experience between people like a handshake where you are sharing that experience rather than have someone looking in. As we are thinking of the theme of constraining movement, we discussed having crutching as a sort of height restriction. The idea of expressive vs compressed movement arose. This fits perfectly into the enclosed body movements . As a way to help us move forward we wrote down different values we can work with and the different outputs we can use. An important thing we need to start manifesting is the continuous feedback . A question we thought of is if we could set a speed level to the movement to count or even that the user has to hold a certain pose for a set time for it to register and in return it would give some sort of feedback.
We started thinking of constraints and dimensions to implement:
How fast can you put the wrist together?
height restriction
- crutching for something to work you have to be below a certain height on the y axis.
Could we restrict the body position (Expressive vs compressed)
- one side of the screen moving from a black and white interaction
Values we can work together:
- body part
- distance
- speed
- time
- position
outputs:
- visual
- sound
- arduino
Continous feedback? – video – something is getting picked up continously
Stretches? when two parts meet
–> visual output of it being met
Exercise & warm ups
At this point we were unsure on how to move forward so we decided to jot down a few concepts of interest and start cutting down:
– Stretching
- Stretching
- Exercise/warmup
- Secret greetings /Covid Greetings
- Body Precaution (drum) (X)
- Body music –> Closer you get to the screen the pitch of a sample gets deeper
We knew that the music would be tough and leaned towards exercise, and stretching then we landed on a form of dance called Butoh.
An important thing that we did was figure out the different combinations that we can have to test it out. if marked x then it does not register.
- right wrist – right kneee
- left wrist – left shoulder
- upside down (x)
- Right wrist -left ankle (x)
- Laying down (x)
Coaching:
- Encouraged to go more into constrained vs Expressive (input)
- the idea of constrain is similar to what we have been thinking about as we had closed body movements within our body combinations.
- Remove feed (Canvas)
- As this was the default we can move from having a visual feedback to show as what the different possibilities are.
- opening up–> cause an effect (Output)
- Similar to the ding example where it had a sound feedback to show us the condition has been met.
- probing the bodily experience
- body pose of closed body
- height restriction of (lowered vs height) as a vertical vs horizontal compression –> movement and response
- Pressuring as an output
- Explore more into: Depth of it through iterations, continuous output of value
Adding qualities to the movement
–> more ways of being expansive
Chloé brought up an interesting type of dance that is inspired by pain after WWII devastation on Japan. We looked into possible movement from the Butoh movements as we are looking for enclosed/constraint bodily movements.
For Monday:
Explore different Standing, Critching, and sitting movements through expressive vs constraint.
