Interactivity M2 (W3 – Thursday)

Today we started working on implementing this abstract inviting feeling of the object. we started with a hexagon shape then later changed it to a pentagon shaped object as it could be seen below. It had a similar shape to a football which makes it have a similar characteristic to that of its inviting feeling. We spent a whole afternoon in the workshop making it different sizes and the one you see below was the one we felt was best as it exactly fit every component. The bigger one we made the movement would effect the cables and disconnect easier than a much tighter object. there are 6 sensors as well for similar use as the plant metaphor where one would be used for direction.

Making the object
Putting in the different cords
Final looking object

For the sequences I was the only one ready with mine to show and decided on implementing the following states:

Charged up state is where the object has received a high level of light intensity after being in the dark for a period of time. This experince could be considered to get the attention of the user as similar to some plants too much light could kill it similarly to too little.

The bloom state has loading feeling, this is where the object has been in the dark for a period of time and one of the sensors receives a higher light intensity. The experience is somewhat calm as it going back to its equilibrium state.

Calm state experience is a slow, sleepy kind of feel to it which I believe would resonate with a lot of people where it could be seen within the pattern, similar to slow breaths.

The put down state is also categorized in a attentive state where the user is called to put it down as an alternative would be similar to calm state but the user would only know that the interaction is over as if it is similar to holding a pet.

The disturbed state experience is it takes your attention as the speed is used, this state is when there is a high level of light. Could be better if there was another phase of the sequence where there was an even faster speed in pattern, as it could show a state of panic.

The experience of shadow long is a feeling of needing something, asking to be moved for example. It could be said that I might have a bias towards these sequences as I made them but my teammate seems to agree with them.

We had issues bringing all of them together to function according to the planned sequences based on the light intensity. Throughout this course we had to use the code but haven’t got fully acquainted since this was the first time working in pair where both people haven’t used the arduino much before which meant it took us longer to tinker with the code and try to make things work.

For tomorrow we hope to be able to show something working as we have made our object movable which was a step in the right direction but maybe we worked faster in the past week and a half than the first half as we were moving too fast and lost at times.
